Gun Control Debate Reignited After Giffords Shooting







Transcript by (www.newsy.com) BY CHRISTINA HARTMAN You're watching multisource politics news analysis from Newsy Days after the shooting rampage that left six dead and Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords fighting for her life - renewed calls for more stringent gun control measures. Police say the shooter- Jared Loughner- used a 9mm Glock pistol -- attaching a high-capacity magazine that could fire off 33 bullets without reloading. A typical clip holds only about 15. (Video from ABC) Authorities say Loughner had as many as 100 bullets -- and was reportedly trying to re-load when he was tackled to the ground. MSNBC: "...why would a civilian need an over-sized ammunition clip like the one Jared Loughner used?" KNTV: "A strong push across the country this morning to outlaw high capacity bullet magazines..." KSTP: "...raising questions about gun control and whether there should be stricter laws." New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy is part of that chorus of critics. She's introducing legislation that would ban the manufacture and sale of high-capacity magazines like the one Loughner allegedly attached to his Glock 19. There was nothing illegal about Loughner's purchase -- the gun nor the magazine. And he passed a federal background check.
