I considered provincetown, but found the hotels were more than I could afford. Does Hyannis have a lot to offer, and which whale watching cruise do you recommend? I also plan on visiting Marthas vinyard, and not sure if I should do the bus tour, or take the public bus and discover the island that way.

Hyannis is pretty central and close to the ferry if you plan on going over to the islands. I would recommend the bus tour. I've heard many good things about it and it travels the majority of the MV if I'm not mistaken.
Also, there's a lot to do right on the cape. In Hyannis there's the Kennedy Compound. Further down the cape (toward P-town) is tons of mini golfing, museums, wildlife conservation land, & lots of unique shops. Ptown is the best for diversity and shopping. It's excellent and I would recommend devoting at least a day to it! It's so much fun there.
Also the upper cape has a lot of neat stuff too. Woods Hole has a small aquarium and another ferry dock. Falmouth has a cute little town to stroll through --but it gets busy there. Also, Mashpee has the Mashpee Commons...which is just shopping but it's pretty nice too.
Have a nice trip! :)
